Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) are key examples of ethanolamines – a chemical group comprised of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) and alcohols. Their purpose is to serve as emulsifiers and foam agents that reduce surface tension, so water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients can blend. In 1998., researches found a link between the topical application of DEA and cancer in animals. Diethanolamine is a chemical compound that is banned by the European Union from personal products and cosmetics for its toxicity. Moreover, Diethanolamine has is linked to the following health issues: hormone disruption, cancer, liver tumors, accumulation in the liver & kidney, causing organ toxicity.

For these reasons, we choose NOT to use any Ethanolamine compounds in Doglyness hair care products.

Parabens are cheap preservatives that are commonly used in cosmetic industries to prevent products from going "bad. " Parabens are preservatives that inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast in cosmetic products. While it may sound like a benefit, parabens carry grave consequences. In studies made on humans, results are showing the disrupted hormonal cycle of the body as they can mimic estrogen, the female hormone. Moreover, hormonal changes reduce the critical production of estrogen in women, which is increasing the risk of breast cancer. Parabens are believed to be the cause of early puberty in girls, and they may also lead to testicular cancer in men.

We choose NOT to use parabens in any of Doglyness hair care products because they irritate the skin and can also affect your dog hormonal balance, which can further result in hair loss.

Petrochemicals are a byproduct of the petroleum industry, and petroleum jelly (or petrolatum) is a byproduct of the petroleum manufacturing process. Yes, petroleum is petrol and often used in personal care products as a moisturizing agent. Many of the substances used to formulate certain perfumes and aromas are petrochemicals. The fact that almost 95% of the synthetic fragrances on the market today are derived from petroleum byproducts is disturbing. Among them are benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and many other known toxic stimulants capable of causing cancer, congenital disabilities, central nervous system disorders, and allergic reactions.

We choose NOT to use petroleum-derived ingredients in any of Doglyness hair care products because petrochemicals contain cancer-causing contaminants known as carcinogens, and repeated exposure is linked to endocrine disruption and several different types of cancer. There is no intrinsic benefit to the hair or skin as petroleum-derived substances form a barrier over skin and hair, serving as a filler in products with little beneficial function.

Phenoxyethanol is another nasty preservative often used in hair care products. It may cause organ system toxicity and skin, eye, and lung irritation. It can also cause the central nervous system shutdown and vomiting.

We choose NOT to use phenoxyethanol in any of Doglyness hair care products because it is very harmful, especially if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. It irritates the skin and eyes and can cause blistering on the skin as well.

Phthalates are a cluster of chemicals, mostly used in household products and plastics, to soften and increase elasticity. Phthalates are often called "plasticizers." The most toxic form of Phthalates is DEHP and B79P. To limit yours and your pet's exposure to Phthalates, be sure to read product labels and choose products that are phthalate or PVC free. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declares that phthalates are carcinogenic (go to source).

We choose NOT to use phthalates in any of Doglyness hair care products because they are carcinogens, and like parabens, they can be absorbed through the skin and cause a range of health and reproductive problems. Phthalates are also highly dangerous for the environment.

Polyethylene glycols, known as PEGs, are another petroleum-based composites. PEG is often used in the cosmetic industry to help create a creamy, rich texture.

PEG features high levels of dioxin - a carcinogen and is a byproduct of the ethoxylation process. According to the David Suzuki Foundation (go to source), during the manufacturing process of PEGs, they could have been contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recognizes ethylene oxide as a cancer-causing substance. For this reason, we choose to avoid PEGs in all of our cosmetic solutions.

Propylene glycol, known as PPG, is a chemical widely used in cosmetic industries serving as a humectant to give the product a firmer consistency and keep formulas melting in the heat or freezing in the cold.

We choose NOT to use propylene glycol as a part of our ingredients as it can modify the structure of the skin by enabling harmful substances to penetrate through and increase their possibility of reaching the bloodstream. PPGs are also categorized as chemicals causing moderate health issues by the Environmental Working Group as it has shown connections to allergies and skin irritation.

Silicones are a class of chemical compounds that adds slip and silky texture to hair and skincare products. Silicones are broadly used in the cosmetics industry and include words that end with -cone or -siloxane. They consist of Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, and Cyclopentasiloxane. The issue with these silicones is they get accumulated in our dog's skin and hair follicles, and it's tough to remove silicone, which can cause problems on pets. Therefore, silicone continues to accumulate, which blocks pores and doesn't allow the skin to breathe naturally.

We can compare them to rubber or plastic. Silicones only provide an aesthetic benefit. They do nothing for overall hair health. They give the coat the illusion of shine, but it's not the shine we want – it's a fake shine from the plastic. The brightness we aim to achieve is when the cuticle layer is sealed, and light reflects off the coat. For us, hair in good condition is an adequately hydrated hair and kept as healthy as possible.

We choose NOT to use silicones in any Doglyness hair care products because there is no intrinsic benefit to using them. Silicones do not penetrate the hair shaft for improvement or conditioning, and they are used to give off the appearance of healthier hair. Additionally, silicones add weight to the coat, and this is not optimal for grooming and appearance of fine and delicate hair.

Sulfates are our number one ingredients to avoid. Sulfates are surfactants (surface acting agents) used to clean the dirt and excess sebum from the skin and scalp. The most common surfactants are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) that are used in shampoos to create a lather when mixed with water. Sulfates are nasty chemicals that can be found in commercial-grade cleaners and degreasers, including engine cleaners and floor detergents! And while they are effective at cleaning, the reason we are strictly avoiding them is that they are highly drying and damaging to coat, stripping it of its natural oils and causing frizzy hair.

Compounds in sulfates include ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Chemical 1,4-dioxane does not denigrate, which means that even after multiple rinses, the chemical remains. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has deemed ethylene oxide as a known human carcinogen, and 1,4-dioxane might cause cancer (go to source).

We choose NOT to use harsh surfactants and sulfates in any of Doglyness hair care products because we do not want to strip and interrupt the dog's natural coat shaft. Dog's natural oils keep the overall dog and his skin healthy and protected from various diseases and environmental threats. In some cases, sulfates can even cause coat loss in animals and hair loss in humans!

Sulfates are also harmful to the environment and aquatic species.

We choose NOT to use any synthetic colors or dyes in Doglyness hair care products because artificial colorants are full of toxins they leave behind. Those toxins are increasing sensitivity and irritation in pets, and they can also block the follicles and stop the hair growth. While many synthetic colors have been banned from foods, there is very little regulation of their use in hair care products, so it's essential to take extra precautions. Our definition of a "pretty "product is simple and based on clean ingredients that the product is made of, not outside looks.

This controversial chemical ingredient is a potent antifungal and antibacterial agent used in cosmetics and toiletries. Triclosan can accumulate in fat cells and keep the human body in a state of toxicity. It can cause endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity or skin, eye, and lung irritation.
